The Special Education Teacher will implement a push-in and in some cases a pull-out support model for students in grades K-5. The special education teacher will provide targeted instruction and support to students with traditional or mainstream and diverse learning needs in both specialized settings and inclusive classrooms. This role is essential in fostering academic growth, promoting self-advocacy, and encouraging meaningful participation in school activities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Inclusive Practices- Collaborate with general education teachers to push into classrooms, providing in-class support and interventions that facilitate access to the general curriculum for students with disabilities.
- Instructional Support- Deliver individualized or small group instruction in a pull-out setting to address specific skill deficits in reading, writing, and mathematics.
- Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)- Monitor IEPs for students, ensuring goals are measurable and aligned with state standards. Participate in IEP meetings and contribute to the assessment process.
- Assessment and Progress Tracking- Conduct regular assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instructional strategies as needed. Maintain detailed records of student performance, and share updates with guidance counselors, families and staff.
- Behavior Management- Implement and reinforce positive behavior support strategies that promote a respectful and engaging learning environment. Address behavioral challenges proactively and effectively.
- Collaboration- Partner with school staff, and families to create a cohesive support system for students, ensuring that everyone involved is aware of the student’s needs and progress.
- Professional Development- Engage in ongoing professional growth through workshops, training sessions, and collaboration with colleagues to stay informed about best practices in special education and inclusive teaching.
- Family Engagement- Establish and maintain open communication with families to discuss student progress, share strategies for support at home, and encourage active involvement in their child’s education.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Education, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- Valid state certification/license in Special Education or equivalent credentials.
- Experience working with K-5 students with various learning challenges in both push-in and/or pull-out models is preferred.
- Understanding of differentiated instruction and inclusive teaching strategies.
- Strong assessment skills with the ability to monitor student progress effectively.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
